Get Him to the Greek
Dir: Nicholas Stoller, 2010
Profanity-filled disappointment.
Record company employee Aaron Green (Jonah Hill) is tasked with getting notoriously drug addled and unpredictable rock star Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) to the Greek Theater in Los Angeles for an anniversary concert. Chaos ensues, of course, as Snow has other ideas than heading straight where he's supposed to be. Aaron, instead of fighting the rocker's self-destructive debauchery, often joins in.
Get Him to the Greek has a handful of funny scenes and a dozen or so good jokes, but it's not an overall funny movie. It's actually more sad and annoying most of the time than it is laugh-worthy. It lacks what other Apatow & Co. films usually have — a likable, entertaining protagonist, a good lead actor and a clever script. Russell Brand is great, but he can't carry the movie all on his own and he gets little help from Jonah Hill and Sean Combs. There is some hilarity in his relationship with oversexed pop star Jackie Q, but even that turns sad and unrewarding towards the end. All the situations promise laughs, but deliver few.
I'd wait for DVD with this one. I'll bet the extra features will make it better.
