The Ghost Writer
Dir: Roman Polanski, 2010
Slow, choppy and mostly dull.
A talented ghost writer known as "The Ghost" (Ewan McGregor) is hired to polish the memoirs of scandal-plagued ex prime minister Adam Lang — British of course — played by Pierce Brosnan, after the PM's long-time assistant and ghost writer dies under mysterious circumstances. The Ghost, who's forbidden to leave the ultra-secure oceanside mansion he, Lang, Lang's wife (Olivia Williams) and Lang's very personal assistant, Amelia Bly (Kim Cattrall) are all holed up in, begins to uncover some unsavory secrets, just as Lang is publicly flogged for apparent ties to prisoner torture.
This movie is not even remotely exciting until the last half hour. In all fairness, once it picks up, it never loses momentum. The rest of the time, however, all you see are scenes of The Ghost getting stupidly close to the disgraced family, reading the god-awful manuscript and staring out at the gray landscape. McGregor is great and makes the character likable enough, so it's not a painful ride, just a pointless one.
